Hi j rector:

<< I can't remember the cost to make cable 2-way w/high bandwidth, but it aint cheap >>

From what I have read it is $25 per home, but they can not do it for a single house but rather for a cluster of nearly 10,000 houses. Anyway it is being done right now by several cable operators in the selective geografical areas (Cox, Time Warner, Comcast and even financially trubled TCI). Their objective is to offer the phone services in addition to the cable TV.

<< In addition, 65% of the US is served by cable, virtually 0% anywhere else in the world. >>

That is what I thought as well, but then I sow some numbers which changed my mind. The number of cable TV recepients in China is 50 millions (as published in some newspaper article I read), almost as many as in the US. Cable is also popular in some European countries and in the Pacific Rim region. And the most important argument: Coax Cable is much better wire to the Point of presense as compared with a twisted pair. As a result it is much easier "meaning less expansive in a long run" to make communication equipment for it. For instance you do not have to fight noise, because the signal is much cleaner, you also do not need to make rate adoption to the distance and line quality, like ADSL and RADSL modems need.
