Them's Trophy Wives. The very term suggests that it is a male way of flaunting success. Like the jock mentality you described.
I think it's natural for successful men to think in such competitive terms. We evolved to view competition as the greatest test of ability/worthiness to survive. I imagine most women see/do it differently.
