Croc,

I remember the snowshoes you're talking about, and I also liked the narrow ones - easier to keep from putting one on top of the other, which kind of messes up the process. I have a hard time imagining an aluminum snowshoe.

On poles - a while back I was hiking up in the mountains here with some Igorot guides, and we came across a Caucasian couple striding earnestly along at a terrific clip, each with what looked like a ski pole in each hand. They were using them like you would use cross-country ski poles, only without snow. I got a good laugh out of it, and the Igorot guys laughed hard enough to split - being ruthless, they didn't wait until the couple was out of earshot, and I think the ground-skiers were a little put off. I've since heard that such things are getting pretty common over there. Have you ever tried them, is there any advantage?

Steve
