My parents are both Lit. professors, so I suppose I was born an English major. Always wanted to escape from it; ended up writing for a living anyway. Not, thankfully, about literature - I wouldn't want to try competing with the progenitors on that score.

Both Wilde and Shaw were occasionally accused of setting up artificial situations as a showcase for their wit. But wit at that level is worth building a showcase for, I'd say.
