Yes, the narrow snowshoes are also better for avoiding the dreaded "stomp-and-fall"... whereby you trip yourself by stepping on one snowshoe with the other one... Great way to fall forward on your face... <gg>

I've never tried out the new metal snowshoes, but they have nylon webbing instead of babiche. I guess they are OK, but I have an aesthetic preference for my ash-and-babiche shoes. Even pleasant to see them sitting in a snowbank outside the window with some little chickadees perched on them cracking open sunflower seeds out of the birdfeeder... (-:

And yes, I've seen hikers with those ski pole walking sticks too. I'm never quite sure if people use them for stability or because they want to walk with greater arm motion for aerobic exercise. I guess they would be useful on rough terrain. Personally, I enjoy walking without having to carry anything. Usually I'm carrying a pack, a camera, binoculars, a saw or some other thing and it's just nice to not have to carry anything sometimes...
