Investing in stocks clearly isn't a zero sum game. There isn't a loser for every gainer - unlike foreign exchange. In the long run they go up as profits are reinvested or pay income. Trading stocks could be zero sum when you remove this long-run trend.

From an economic viewpoint though the traders help maintain market liquidity and so someone must be benefiting from this "service".
