VLSI Partners With 3Com to Provide Data Security From the Desktop to the Network
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 18, 1999--
VLSI Data Security Chip To Be Designed Into 3Com Products Including Popular Network Interface Cards

VLSI Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:VLSI) has entered into a strategic technology partnership with 3Com Corp. (Nasdaq:COMS) that will revolutionize how data is secured from the desktop to the network.

VLSI will supply a custom data security co-processor chip to 3Com that will be designed into several of the company's network product offerings, including network interface card (NIC) products for client and server applications. The VLSI custom IC built for 3Com supports the Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) specification, giving 3Com a lead in developing products that meet the security needs of its enterprise customers.

Neil Shea, VLSI vice president of Internet and Secure Products, commented: "A wired world and data security go hand-in-hand. This important design win at 3Com demonstrates that data security is becoming a standard requirement for all kinds of communications equipment and that the best way to build in wire speed security is to do it in hardware. Data security is no longer a niche market, and we've got the orders to prove it."

Tom Werner, vice president and general manager for 3Com's LAN Connectivity Division said: "As a result of this partnership, standards-based security will be delivered to every corner of the network. The VLSI chip provides us with a revolutionary way to deliver full data encryption without compromising PC or network performance."

IPSec Co-Processor

The IPSec co-processor IC integrates a number of VLSI's data security on-chip building blocks covering functionality for encryption and decryption, hashing, public-key acceleration and random number generation. 3Com products using the chip will deliver unimpeded throughput for encrypted data from the desktop through the network enabling secure, rapid transmission of data.

VLSI in the Data Security Market

VLSI approaches the fast-growing market opportunity for electronic commerce security as the acknowledged leader in digital cryptography ICs. The company began its involvement in the data security market supplying cryptography ICs to data security-conscious private companies.

Rapid growth in sectors such as digital cable television, wireless communications, the Internet, direct broadcast satellite and electronic commerce have resulted in unprecedented demand for secure, private communications in almost all sectors of the electronics industry.

VLSI's emphasis on hardware-based data security solutions delivers the advantages of higher performance through accelerated encryption/decryption processing capabilities and improved security by isolating sensitive cryptographic functions and code in a physically "walled off" IC resistant to electronic and physical attack. VLSI data security products have become key elements in a growing number of high-profile communications and computing programs.
