-- Global ISP finds total solution in Nortel Networks' breadth of product
offerings; creates world-class Internet and backbone services network --
BOSTON, MA, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ - Customers of Apex Global Internet Services (AGIS), the world's first facilities-based Internet Service Provider (ISP), will soon be able to fulfill their data communications needs through a new scaleable, high-performance and IP optimized optical backbone network. Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) announced today a three-year purchase agreement with AGIS for the delivery of a solution comprised of best-in-class network products and services spanning data and telephony, fully demonstrating Nortel Networks Unified Networks vision.
Expanding their global Internet business across 35 core nodes, AGIS will replace their core IP routing network nationwide with Nortel Networks equipment. The terms of the agreement include Nortel Networks rolling out key product technologies including IP switching, routing, dial access, VPNs and integrated network management (INM). AGIS' backbone network will consist of Nortel Networks' market-leading Passport ATM Switches and IP routing product lines, including the largest deployment to date of Nortel Networks' CVX 1800 Carrier Access Switches. All of Nortel Networks equipment deployed by AGIS will be unified through Nortel Networks' network management systems including Optivity and Integrated Network Management (INM). AGIS' network is scheduled to be in service by July 30, 1999.
''Our agreement with AGIS represents the strength and scope of Nortel Networks' product portfolio, and is one of the first examples of the implementation of the Unified Networks strategy for a carrier customer,'' said Clarence Chandran, president of Nortel Networks' Carrier Packet Networks division. ''Nortel Networks is committed to creating greater value for our customers by delivering integrated network solutions that excel in scalability, reliability and performance, while remaining interoperable with today's emerging standards.''
''Nortel Networks is unique in its ability to address all our needs in the Internet space,'' said Rob Orr, COO of AGIS. ''With their long history and experience in delivering telephony solutions combined with the strength of Bay Networks' data offerings, we felt that Nortel Networks was one-of-a-kind in the industry for really being able to understand our needs as a carrier. Unified Networks offers a set of solutions that we can depend on to bring our services quickly to market.''
The terms of the agreement call for Nortel Networks to deliver a network infrastructure for dial access that includes 45 CVX 1800 Carrier Access Switches, with a total capacity of 60,000 ports. All ports will have Nortel Networks' CVX SS7 Gateway and CVX Policy Manager support. In addition, 10,000 incumbent routing ports will also be replaced by Nortel Networks equipment.
Combining the high performance of the recently acquired Bay Networks routing product line, Nortel Networks will provide BCN core routers along with Passport 7480 edge switches. A Passport 7480 will be deployed at each core node providing functions such as Frame Relay, ATM edge switching and adaptation.
Nortel Networks will also provide AGIS with a suite of element management systems including Optivity (for Bay Networks routers) and Integrated Network Management (INM), creating a multi-layer cross network environment second to none in the industry. The INM system will be implemented to provide consolidated management for all network equipment including fault management, performance management, SLA (Service Level Agreement) management, and flexible billing and accounting, to name a few.
Acting as a beta customer site for the recently announced Nortel Networks Passport 15000, AGIS' network will include deployment of the Passport 15000 Core Nodes at high density sites; each equipped initially with three 4pt OC-3 interfaces. AGIS will also conduct lab evaluations and operational trials of the Nortel Networks' Versalar 15000 Internet Aggregation Router for the purposes of edge access. Nortel Networks commitment to the timely implementation of the MPLS standard will also be critical to AGIS' beta trial of MPLS Label Switch Routing on the Passport 7480 and Passport 15000 platforms.
