Alexa--

Speaking to what you and Bill have had to say: yes, body-building is pretty wierd. I have a friend who got into it--a woman--and it was pretty amazing. Before you knew it her arms looked extremely strange, and she was obsessed with the idea of eliminating all "body fat".

Okay, she's athletic, into rock climbing and all sorts of other frightening sports, but this was wierd. She came to her senses when her boyfriend told her it wasn't attractive. She hadn't equated "normal" feminine body image with "attractive", but she took the point.

Okay. An odd question. Why should we strive to conform to men's feminine ideals, and what determines these ideals in the first place? After all, they're not the same in all societies. Still, now that she's left it off she looks like a human being again.
