Actually your lan would have been slow even if you did get it to work because all traffic would be send up the ADSL line even traffic between two computers on your network.

Netbeui gets bad mouthed for two reasons.

1. It generates a lot of broadcast traffic (This is inherently bad in ALL WAN applications).

2. Its completely non-routable and therefore cannot be implimented in large scale networks.

Both these issues are not a problem on small single segment LANS. and has the benefit that no-one on the internet can talk this non-routable language therefore you can't be hacked when your running this from an IP network.

Even without the messed up DHCP config this is still desirable and I use it on my network from a security perspective.

BTW: Got my 8 Port 10/100 Ethernet Switch (a real one, not a switching hub) last week and now have all computers on my network running 100Mbps full Duplex. Talk about fast.... Burning CD's at 4X over the network is seemless and robut. couldn't be more pleased.
