Why is the K7 not shipping today? What is a Q/A cycle for? Surely you are aware that the first prototypes, even from Intel, of a major new design have many things that do not work. Usually, they are said to be minor, but whether they are minor or not depends upon what you are trying to use the for. I have even heard of a chip maker that let a chip go out the door that could not multiply. Multiply is a common function! Isn't your surprise a little overdone?
