Gerald, I was saying "Linux, anyone?" in jest. I'll soon be installing Linux onto my desktop just to see what all the hoopla is about. But I agree with everything that you say. Linux isn't ready for mainstream, nor is it exactly a top choice for enterprises as well because of its uncertain software and tech support.

On the other hand, remember that Intel themselves has an investment in Red Hat Linux, mainly to hedge their bets. If Microsoft has problems with the timeliness of the Windows 2000 release, imagine how confident Intel feels about Microsoft porting the OS to Merced in time for its mid-2000 release.
