WARNING --- lengthy non-APPL post below...
This really is a *APPL* discussion area, so I won't clog it up anymore with educating Bill about Microsoft products (after this post, of course). However, if anyone is curious, the book "Inside Windows NT" by Helen Custer, published by Microsoft Press is a quite readable history of the NT architecture. Bill, since you are quite misinformed on this, I would particularly recommend it to you. I would start with the chapter on monolythic operating systems like DOS and how NT differs from them.
FYI, you don't use the config.sys and autoexec.bat to install CD-ROM drivers (or anything from CD-ROM) in WinNT. You do it from the Control Panel. And your point makes no sense. So what that you have to use DOS to recognize the CD-ROM when installing NT. NT isn't on the computer yet, so how could it affect the situation? DOS is being replaced, and becomes irrelevant after you replace it.
Again, there is no love between me and MSFT, but I do have to operate in this world, which means being proficient on their computer systems, as well as Macintoshes and UNIX.
Anyways, that's the last post of mine on subjects unrelated to the discussion area.
