Report: Methanol fuel stations feasible
(Last updated 5:48 PM ET January 18)

DETROIT, Jan. 18 (UPI) A report by the American Methanol Institute says many
neighborhood gas stations can afford to add methanol pumps to serve customers
with alternative-fuel vehicles.

The report today says it would cost an existing gas station about $50,000 to add
methanol, which could become a widely used fuel in California, New York and
other states that require zero-emissions vehicles by 2003.

The report says gas stations in Massachusetts, Germany and Japan also are likely to
add methanol pumps in coming years.

The institute report estimated it would cost $100 million to add methanol pumps at
about 10 percent of the gas stations in a given region.

The report by researchers Raymond Lewis and Gregory Dolan says California
already has the nation's largest network of methanol fueling facilities. About 100 gas
stations offer the fuel statewide, serving about 15,000 vehicles.

The report is expected to be released at the upcoming SAE International Congress
and Exposition in Detroit.
