II Corinthians 6 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. Being separate means exactly that, having no part of, or being detached from a thing. As a servant of Christ, a precious possession of God we are called to holiness. How can we consider ourselves separate from the world and holy if we still actively and knowingly participate in sin? Separation means to seek God in every aspect of your life and shun every "appearance of evil". To go back into the world is to enter in as Christ's ambassador bearing the gospel not to participate in it's sin but to stand against it.
