Steve: The asteroids that have the greatest chance of hitting us are the Apollo and Icarus asteroid clusters. Both have asteroids that regularly cross our orbit. One came so close in the 80s that it skimmed our upper atmosphere and was caught on videotape (accedentally) by a man on vacation in the state of Washington. Unfortunately, if one of them is on a collision course with us, we would probably have at best a few weeks to determine it. Another complication is that sometimes their orbits are slightly modified as they whip around the sun. FT
