AMKR Holds 24 US Patents and Is Investing $40 in Tainwan Venture

According to email communication with Kristine of AMKR Investor Relation, the company currently holds 24 U.S. patents, five of which are jointly held with AICL, related to various IC packaging technologies, in addition to other pending patents. These patents will expire at various dates from 2012 through 2016. With respect to development work undertaken jointly with AICL, the company and AICL share intellectual property rights under the terms of the Supply Agreements between the company and AICL. The supply agreements also provide for the cross-licensing of intellectual property rights between the company and AICL. In addition, the company enters into agreements with other developers of packaging technology to license or otherwise obtain certain process or packaging technologies.

In October the company said that it would invest an estimated $40 million over the next two years in a new Taiwan packaging joint venture, Taiwan Semiconductor Technology Corporation (TSTC). TSTC will provide independent advanced IC packaging foundry services primarily for the Taiwan market and Taiwan wafer foundry output. After investing, Amkor Technology will own a 25% interest in TSTC.

For further information can be found from the company's press release on its IR web site.
