*** Intel plans to build encryption into chips
(WSJ) - Intel Corp. plans to build encryption capabilities into
future computer chips, a move that could accelerate the spread of the
government-controlled technology. Intel, the world's largest chip
maker, is expected to discuss encryption and other
information-security issues at a conference that begins Monday in San
Jose, Calif. Compaq Computer Corp., the No. 1 personal-computer
maker, also may discuss building encryption features into some future
machines, one person familiar with its plans said. Encryption, which
scrambles data for protection from eavesdroppers, is becoming key to
electronic communications and commerce. Besides safeguarding privacy,
encryption helps create the digital equivalent of signatures to
authenticate buyers and sellers in online transactions. ###
