Dell Secures Share of Number One Position in Worldwide Personal Workstation Market.
Also Rises to Number Two Position in Combined Market of UNIX and NT Systems
ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 1999--Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ:DELL - news), the world's leading direct computer systems company, today announced that it has claimed a share of the lead in the personal workstation market, entering into a ''virtual tie'' with Hewlett-Packard Company, according to preliminary estimates by International Data Corporation (IDC)(1).
IDC's year-end analysis showed that Dell grew from zero personal workstation market share at the beginning of 1997 to a leading position by year-end 1998. Personal workstations leverage the Microsoft® Windows NT® operating system and Intel® processors rather than proprietary operating systems and processors. Dell also secured the number two position in total worldwide workstation shipments, which includes systems based on both UNIX and Windows NT operating systems(1). Competitors in this market include Sun Microsystems, IBM, Compaq and Silicon Graphics.
