Tuesday January 19, 6:45 am Eastern Time Company Press Release Phoenix and National Semiconductor Announce Far-Reaching Strategic Relationship SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 1999--Phoenix Technologies™ Ltd. (Nasdaq:PTEC - news), the global leader in foundation and connectivity IP software, and National Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:NSM - news) today announced a far-reaching strategic relationship whereby the two companies will jointly work on advanced technologies to minimize the time-to-deployment of next-generation National Semiconductor products.
While Phoenix™ products historically have enabled computer manufacturers using National's Cyrix processors and chipsets to quickly build products ranging from sub-$800 desktops, sub-$1000 notebooks and thin clients to workstations and servers, this agreement formalizes and extends the technological cooperation between the companies.
In particular, the agreement establishes a dedicated engineering team, enabling both companies to further accelerate the time-to-market for their mutual OEMs in traditional and emerging markets.
''This agreement, coupled with Phoenix's strong presence in our primary markets, will provide National/Cyrix and our customers early access to important enabling software technologies which will significantly reduce the overall time-to-market,'' said Dick Sanquini, vice president and general manager of the Cyrix Group at National Semiconductor.
''We continue to develop strategic partnerships that enhance our customers' ability to easily use our parts, and Phoenix has become an important member of this team.''
''Today's announcement is significant for both companies, with National/Cyrix emerging as a major force in the fast growing sub-$800 desktop and sub-$1000 notebook markets where Phoenix products, such PhoenixBIOS, NoteBIOS and AwardBIOS, already enjoy an unquestioned leadership position,'' said Laurent Gharda, vice president of marketing, Phoenix Technologies.
''With both companies aggressively pursuing both traditional and non-traditional PC markets, this agreement will accelerate the adoption of our companies' advanced technologies in these growing markets.''
