Jules, as you know from my previous forecasts I have no methodology
that takes any of this into consideration but I have been within a
penny every quarter for the past year or two. Fourth quarter was very
good for MIPs shipped especially in the mainframe business area. The
glass house is in a panic to get retooled prior to the Y2K data center
freeze. The first quarter should be the best in history. All kick
off events were cancelled. The mainframe soiree' in San Francisco for
2000 mainframe specialists in January was cancelled. Quotas were out
the first business day of January instead of February. The only
events scheduled are for customers and they are selling situations not
education. IBM needs 60% of the years business in the first half not
the usual 40 to 45 percent. The glass is half full and wont become
half empty until the late summer. Of course, making predictions
(which are nothing but guesses) prior to the events is fraught with
risk beyond what a normal mortal's ego should be able to stand so
please, everyone, be kind to me if I turn out to be horribly wrong. As
you know, I say all of this in good humor.
