Siemens successful in Hungary:
Orders received for 500,000 telephone lines, 40 communication servers and 300,000 telephones.

The Siemens Information and Communication Networks Group can
report a series of successes in the
Hungarian telecommunications market. The company has been awarded
the contract from the private
telephone network operator Matáv Rt., Budapest, to significantly
expand the country-wide telephone
network in Hungary. Over the next three years, Siemens will
install and start operating digital EWSD
switching systems for a total of approximately 500,000 telephone
lines. Siemens has thus increased its
share in the Hungarian telecommunications market with regard to
switching technology to about 60
percent.

Moreover, Siemens, the market leader for telephones in Hungary,
has already received the order from
Matáv to deliver around 300,000 Euroset 805S telephones by the
end of the year 2000. Matáv Rt. is the
largest network operator in Hungary. In this country, with its
population of approximately 10 million,
around 30 out of 100 residents had a telephone connected to a
main station line at the end of 1997,
whereas in Germany the figure is 57 out of 100.

The Hungarians also rely on Siemens for private telecommunication
systems. The company has now
equipped the information headquarters of the fire department head
office with five Hicom Dispatcher
desktop systems designed for special requirements in emergency
call and operations centers. The 2.5
million people in Budapest and its suburbs can thus depend on
reliable connections to the fire department.
Siemens just provided the Hungarian police with 18 Hicom 300 E
communication servers. In addition,
Siemens was also awarded the contract from the Hungarian ministry
of defense for a pilot project. The
network with 24 Hicom systems and approximately 13,400 ports
serves as a basis for updating the
communication infrastructure in the Hungarian armed forces.
Siemens can thus reinforce its number one
position in the Hungarian market for private switching systems
(PBX, Private Branch Exchange).

With over 170 million line units, the EWSD digital switching
system from Siemens is the most successful
system worldwide. It is used by more than 300 operators in over
100 countries.

To date, over 850,000 Hicom systems with around 28 million line
units have been installed worldwide.
Just under 16 million of these line units are large scale systems
