Nortel Networks Announces Contract to Expand Telecommunications Network in The Bahamas

DMS Switching Upgrades Ensure Year 2000 Readiness

MIAMI, FL, Jan. 19 /CNW/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) today announced that the Bahamas Telephone company (BATELCO), has awarded Nortel Networks a contract for more than US$13 million for the expansion and modernization of their switching network. This upgrade will ensure Year 2000 compliancy of the existing BATELCO network of Nortel Networks' DMS systems and will also enable BATELCO to provide advanced Custom Local Area Signaling Services (CLASS) such as Caller ID and Call Waiting ID to their customers.

The network expansion includes further Nortel Networks' DMS-10 system deployment and the expansion and upgrade of BATELCO's existing Nortel Networks' DMS-10, DMS-100 and DMS-300 system base. ''Expanding and upgrading our network with Nortel Networks' Year 2000-compliant software assures our customers that their phone services will not be disrupted by the Millennium bug,'' says Michael Symonette, BATELCO general manager. ''We are also looking forward to offering advanced, powerful services to our residential and business customers via our expanded network.'' BATELCO has a fully digital network with over 100,000 DMS lines.

The DMS-10 is deployed in 35 countries, and offers advanced digital switching technology, backed by two decades of proven reliability around the world. Nortel Networks and BATELCO enjoy a more than 20 year relationship, beginning in the 1970's when Nortel Networks installed a cross-bar switch in the Bahamas.
