sounds like the key word here might be "oversell".
you can't sell what you don't own, so the transaction would wind up
being a non-event. fraught with hassle.
doubt they'd let you get away without paying commissions on it either.
so, a small loss in that sense.

on the trading page there are two sell positions.
"sell to open" and "sell to close."
it makes a big difference which one you click going in.
