sounds like the key word here might be "oversell".
you can't sell what you don't own, so the transaction would wind up
being a non-event. fraught with hassle.


Sure you can - it's a short sale. I'd guess they will record the extra 1000 share transaction as a short and if he is lucky enough to buy back (cover) at a lower price, then he makes money.
