Edwarda, you asked isn't there potentially a partial offset in the tax rate?

A resounding No!!! There is no direct connection between taxable income as defined by the IRS and net income as defined by GAAP accounting. So a change in reported net income to shareholders as a result in the change of allowable write-offs for R&D will have no affect on taxes.

In a previous post I indicated that the best way to watch a company is to look at free cash flow. Charlie pointed out (and I strongly concurred) that you need to watch income taxes paid, which you can find in SEC filings in the cash flow section rather than provision for income taxes which is found in the income statement. This will give you an idea of how aggressive the company may be in its accounting practices.
