Danny, I believe DMT is better than CAP is because DMT using multiple channels(frequency spreading) to get another level of channel gain, i.e. lower bit error rate. If this is not true, ATT would not allow DMT to become standard 3 years ago. What are the importants of this channel gain? Well, for the same distance, DMT has higher bandwidth than CAP wich is good for VoD applications. For the same bit rate, say 1.5Mbps, DMT can reach longer distance, which means large coverage area. This is important for internet application. Finally, multiple channnels is easy to scale to different rate. That is it may be simpler to interface with ATM or other switches. Just my 2 cents. (remember many local loop may have 5miles long, even DMT can not cover everybody)
