SEMICONDUCTOR EQUIPMENT UPDATE

Stock First Call Reported Beat Estimate By Comments

KLAC .09 .11 22% Earnings shown exclude a 0.31/sh charge.
Bookings improved, especially for a
couple of the high-end products.

NVLS .23 .23 0% Book-to-bill > 1:1, vs < 1:1 last quarter;
Sales about flat with last quarter.

SVGI -.26 -.21 19% Bookings about flat with last quarter

TER .12 .14 16% Bookings of 371 million vs
245 million last quarter, up 51%!

Commentary: All beat expectations by a moderate amount except NVLS, which met expectations.
The big news is that Teradyne's new orders exceed last quarter's by 51%. Assembly and test
equipment companies ("back-end" companies) are considered by some to be a leading indicator
for the sector, on the theory that one of the first things that happens in a recovery
is that unit volumes go up. Thus, this huge increase would seem to bode well for the
industry. (KLIC is another company to watch in this regard - I don't know when they report.
