| Pointe Communications Launches Carrier Traffic Across New U.S. ATM Fiber Communications Network
HOUSTON, Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Pointe Communications Corporation (OTC Bulletin Board: PCOM - news; PointeComâ„¢) President and Chief Operating Officer Gary D. Morgan today announced that the company, a provider of broad- based telecommunications and Internet services, has placed in-service the first phase of its new Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) fiber transport network in the U.S. The network is a seamless cell-based architecture connecting the company's switching facilities in Miami, Atlanta, Houston and Dallas. Morgan stated that PointeCom has invested $4.3 million since October 1998 in new network construction. The Company expects to extend its ATM fiber network to New York and Los Angeles by the end of February.

Morgan commented that, ''With PointeCom's Central and South American network now connected to the major carrier hubs in the U.S., the Company can now provide very competitively priced services to a significantly greater number of customers. Our new and expanding network makes us a leading facilities-based communications service provider in the U.S./Latin America market.''

The new ATM fiber backbone reduces the complexity of terminating voice and data across the same network, and allows bandwidth on demand for voice, data and Internet over a single network. The network will be managed from PointeCom's Network Control Center in Houston.

In addition to its carrier business, Morgan pointed out that retail and corporate offerings of local, long distance, Internet and prepaid services are continuing in both its domestic and Latin American markets. Morgan added, ''Our strategic CLEC plan is being aggressively implemented in both the U.S. and Latin America. Demand for new service offerings is meeting, and in some cases, exceeding our expectations.''
