I made the mistake of getting my wife into stocks. I'm more of a trader and she has a staunch buy-and-hold approach. She enthusiastically bought my first 3 recommendations but wouldn't sell them for a quick profit. Now 2 out of 3 are languishing in the loss column and I can't help thinking that it's my fault. Moral of story, there is no easy way out of this mess guys. Dammit, we simply HAVE to communicate with them. Take the time to discover what her risk tolerance is, and her attitude towards selling for a quick buck. Another area to clarify beforehand is her attitude towards selling short and margin.

And if that doesn't get you a little extra computer-only time, try this one:

Do you know how many men it takes to open a can of beer?

None. It should already be opened by the time she brings it to you.
