an excellent article. i have been tossing this term (increasing returns) around but many still do not get it. i guess the old economics of diminishing returns is still too cemented in the skulls of those who are afraid of venturing into the brave new world.

the ramifications are immense for economists and investors. ask yourself:

why did apple with a superior product "fail" in both the computer world and the operating system world?

most critics raved about OS/2 relative to windows. what happened to that superior product known as OS/2?

how did intel build its monopoly?

and last but not least, why is the layout of the keyboard still the same after one hundred odd years? faster and more efficient layouts have been found yet the QWERT keyboard still persists?

INCREASING RETURNS

a fascinating book about the science of complexity and its architects, including brian arthur, is "complexity" by mitchell waldrop.
