Smart move in closing out the Netscape short. They aren't going to roll over and die.

Suggestions? Well my number one holding is Ciprico which just gained 16.5% today. But hey, if you aren't interested I understand. Currently trading at $15, my target this year $25, short term could go to $20. I am on the lookout for similar technology companies which are involved in video/graphics/multimedia, a growth area I think. I'm talking real solid companies here, not Warp 10!!! SGI looks good but management is not particularly trusted at this time.

To be honest though, not a lot looks good. Keep some cash and be careful out there seems like a good strategy.

You might look into the resource sector. Despite what you may have heard about never investing in Canadian mining stocks, at this phase of the market some of the gold and other mining stocks will be a good buy. I am soon going to be increasing my position in BYG Resources, TSE: BYG. They will be releasing news on a regular basis this year, much of it good I hope. What some of these promising juniors need is for the gold price to bounce up. What that needs is a little good old inflation. Is this possible? Certainly this would be a lovely hedge.

I think APCC (American Power Conversion) will go back to 30 from 24 when it releases blowout earnings. It has already pre-released this, so the recent crater smells of manipulation. You have a couple of days to get in before it goes back up IMO. I think APCC will be one of those safe growth stocks that just keeps growing over the next 10 years. POWER PROTECTION. INDUSTRY LEADER. Need I say more.

Verifone is a great company for the short and long term. Always profitable in their old credit card verification biz, now a leader in internet commerce and smartcards and all the rest of it. They are definitely a leader and management has promised to buy back some shares. Too bad we missed the low at $29, still a buy at $36.

Well, that concludes this episode of "Geek's Picks" (not quite as chilling as seeing Cowpland's face in "Mike's Picks" ads in Maclean's magazine (Canadian version of Newsweek), but almost). VFI and APCC would be the most 'solid' of all, APCC is probably your safest bet.

Now if only I can take my own advice.

Ciao,
Geek
