Bob,

if all the planets line up and give one a nudge our way

Didn't you read the q/a on the NASA site? Or the reactions of the astronomers on the search string that you sent to me? The combined gravitational force of the aligned planets is insignificant. These alignments occur constantly, why should one in the year 2000 be any different?

I repeat, the probability of a collision with an asteroid in the year 2000 is no greater than in any other year. The numbering of our years is arbitrary and man-made, and the only problems that will result from it are man-made ones like Y2K, which all of my tech associates assure me will be more inconvenient than catastrophic.

I'm not saying there's nothing to worry about. There are plenty of things, as there are in any other year. Asteroids are not high on the list. There are people who are paid to worry about them; they are well educated, well equipped, and they know a great deal more about it than I do. What good will it do for me to lose sleep over it?

Steve
