Danny, the companies state what the speed of each technology is openly. You need to read the GTE trials to see this. The most important point that you analogy isn't well suited for is that one is a standard not just in the US but in Europe and Europe is an important issue considering we are talking about the internet which is a world technology. The other thing about the speed difference is that your example of a screen loading function is not correct for the future plans of ADSL deployment which is gearing the internet for real-time interactive video applications; cable tv type programming over the internet, video telephone, video conferencing, video on demand, etc. You are still thinking about the internet in its current model T form. I have written alot about the importance of building to the standard. Read my previous posts. I hope this helps. The short answer is; the difference between CAP and DMT is not a luxury but a necessity. Not to say that there isn't risk and concern about how this Beta vs. VHS plays out as I have seen this analogy used. Remember, neither Beta nor VHS was a standard as I understand how this went down. That was the problem; they were to proprietary video protacols that fought it out in the marketplace. The DMT standard was issued precisely to avoid something like this. This is why Bell Atl. formal is requesting a standard modification to allow the coexistance of CAP and DMT.
