I've got a question to all about this cable vs telephone connectivity in regards to the internet and all high speed service deliveries.

The question is as follows: Is there any technology development which gives cable the two way point-to-point security and connectivity capabilities inherent in the telephone infrastructure? Specifically, we know that cable, although a good medium for broadcast services, is not a good medium for much else (IMHO) because of it's shared medium/bandwidth ie. there is no junction or switch box on the telephone poles that isolates every home from each other. Am I incorrect in my assertions or is there some technology I've missed that has been deployed so far. So, it would seem, the telephone companies are sitting (for too long) on the best medium for future high speed communications.
