Bruce,

On ketoprofen, the following extract from Chiroscience web site is of interest:

Background
Dexketoprofen was one of the first improved single isomers to be produced by
Chiroscience R&D. This was developed in collaboration with Laboratorios
Menarini in Spain. Racemic ketoprofen is a well known non steroidal
anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which has wide use.

Utilising the knowledge within Chiroscience R&D of chiral chemistry,
biotransformation, molecular biology and production a novel and economic
route to the single isomer dexketoprofen was established. Several key
process and product patents have been established and a new process using
recombinant enzyme has been approved for use in Spain. The entire process
from concept to first registration was completed within four years.

Dexketoprofen has distinct advantages over the racemic drug since it
provides:

More rapid absorption and onset of analgesia
Lower gastric, upper gastro-intestinal and small intestine damage at an
equivalent dose
Lower level of deposition within the body fat

Haven't heard about much in the way of sales, and surely its prospects will be hurt by Celebrex/Vioxx.

On the issue of the ANDRX law suit, that is very much a specific issue in that Hoechst basically paid off ANDRX to keep the generic off the market for longer. Can't see anything comparable happening with SEPR. (Not to say the class-issue vultures won't find someone/something else to sue about, of course.)
