Broadcom and 3Com Partner on Custom Fast Ethernet Controller IC
High Volume Shipments of 3Com's Fast Ethernet XL PCI Network Interface Card with Broadcom Silicon Begin
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 20, 1999--Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq:BRCM - news), a leading developer of highly integrated silicon solutions that enable broadband digital data transmission to the home and within the business enterprise, today announced it has commenced high-volume shipments of a custom 10/100 BASE-TX Controller IC for 3Com's Fast EtherLink® XL 10/100 PCI Network Interface Card (NIC). This device is the first in a family of advanced, single-chip controller solutions being developed by the two companies, based on the Broadcom® Digi-(PHY)(tm) 10/100 Ethernet physical layer technology, for the Ethernet NIC and LAN-on-Motherboard (LOM) market. Broadcom's Digi-(PHY) core is uniquely suited for single-chip integration due to its digital architecture and superior performance over a broad range of operating conditions.

''The combination of 3Com's Media Access Controller, driver and system expertise with Broadcom's Digi-(PHY) Ethernet physical layer and IC design expertise has resulted in a strong silicon partnership,'' said Jim Jones, Director of Marketing of 3Com's LAN Connectivity Division.

''We chose to partner with Broadcom because of the extreme high quality of their field-proven physical layer technology,'' said Kirk Blattman, Director of Engineering for 3Com.

''With over 50% market share of the global Fast Ethernet NIC and LOM market, 3Com represents an ideal partner,'' said Marty Colombatto, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Networking Business Unit. ''Broadcom has a portfolio of highly sophisticated broadband transmission and physical layer cores that can be easily integrated with our customers' proprietary designs, utilizing cost-effective CMOS process technologies. This unique capability allows Broadcom to achieve new levels of integration while meeting the stringent cost, performance and time-to-market requirements of our customers.''

Broadcom's patent-pending, field-proven Digi-(PHY) core architecture, ensures robust performance, interoperability, and full 10/100 Fast Ethernet standards compliance over a broad range of operating conditions. The Digi-(PHY) core architecture has been shipping in volume production for over one year in Broadcom's Quad-(PHY)(tm) family of products and has been successfully deployed in over 20 million Ethernet switch and hub ports worldwide. The Digi-(PHY) architecture is the first 10/100 BASE-T transceiver core to be successfully ported to 0.5 and 0.35 micron single-poly CMOS process technologies, and the only embedded physical layer core to support both 3.3 and 5.0-volt operation.

Broadcom's High-Speed Networking Products

Broadcom is a leading supplier of single, Quad-(PHY)(tm), Hex-(PHY)(tm), and Octal-(PHY)(tm) transceivers and integrated TX hub and switch silicon solutions for the Fast Ethernet networking market. All of Broadcom's 10/100 networking products incorporate the Broadcom Digi-(PHY) architecture.
