I take it you are talking about your father, and not your brother-in-law. For a moment, I was thinking that your brother-in-law, whom I had mentally pegged as "pretty damn imposing" had done the things you were mentioning.

My own father, I must admit, started smoking dope in the 1970s, when it became cool. I recall distinctly being at a party thrown by my father's lawyer, who lived in our neighborhood, and I was visiting from New Orleans, and was secretly thrilled to be invited, because I was in my twenties, and it made me feel very adult. Unfortunately, all the adults at the party were smoking dope and acting like adolescents, and my then boyfriend and I did not smoke, so we sat there uncomfortably with drinks (scotch on the rocks) in our hands, just watching.
