I agree that the World War II and its aftermath caused the economy to recover. When the Great Depression started under Hoover, unemployment was around 3-4% and shot up to at least 25% by 1933. In 1938, it was still around 18%. Almost half of the economy was devoted to World War II. By the end of the war, all the other economies were in shambles and the US had built up its manufacturing base to support the war. Without the war, it probably would've taken several decades longer to recover from the Great Depression.
