<OT- Government investment in stocks>

Why would we assume that any government influence would be market friendly? In any case, the proper way for government to exert influence is through legislation and regulation. With government ownership, they could bypass the legislative process and impose their will without the benefit of going through elected, accountable representatives.
The price of health care is too high? Let's just tell Merk to cut 20% across the board.
Microsoft has too much influence? How about forcing Dell to ship half of its computers with an alternative operating system.
Unemployment getting to be a problem? Don't let GM farm out so much work overseas.

I think you can see where my paranoia is leading.

I am all for letting individuals control their SS "contributions."

PS. Nothing about the government's behavior would lead me to believe that they understand that it is OUR money.

P.P.S. Just because I am paranoid, it doesn't mean they are not out to get me.
