Very interesting and thoughtful article on the electronics industry in EE Times. It is about the fundamentals shifts that are happening and contains a discussion of new business models.

Futures Ex. Company A builds and sells a hardware platform for $300 to an internet company that resells it for $99 in return for a multi-year sign up contract.

Current Example: E-Machines, a manufacturer of sub $500 PC's has sold 180,000 units and has $70 million in revenue. Their goal is $1 billion in revenue in the first year of operation.

Overall analysis: electronics will be driven by the consumerization of PC's. Price point is now the key to sales, not feature. (For the product as a whole. Not necessarily for the components.) Expansion of production is very likely, but there is a high probability that the rules of the ballgame have changed. Volume up margins down, time cycles shorter, time to market more important for logic componentry.
