BT Alex. Brown Commentary

The overall tone at the semiconductor and semiconductor equipment companies is cautiously optimistic. The strength of the PC market continues to carry the entire group and appears to be stronger than just seasonally strong. Other end markets such as disk drive, modem and communications are also
strong. This bodes well for the first quarter and has enabled many companies to see improved order books for the first quarter. By geography, most major markets appear to be strong with the exception of Japan which is still "bouncing along the bottom." In short, by geography and end market,
business looks solid. Also important to note is that inventories are still low across the board which signals a tighter supply environment. Despite what is clearly a good environment for semiconductors, we still are vigilant for certain potential threats to a semiconductor recovery. While utilization rates are improving, they still need to improve further. A more rational approach to new capacity additions is also essential for a restoration of the demand and supply balances. The global economic picture is also something we will continue to monitor given our belief that semiconductor unit growth is inextricably linked to the overall economy. Still, our outlook is decidedly positive. Our favorite names remain Intel, Amkor, C-Cube, Texas instruments, Linear Technologies, Analog Devices.
