Last year (1/98) was when K6 has been released for over 6
months and was proven to be lagging behind.

I remembered K6 was once the fastest(Mhz wise) x86.

I see a repeated pattern here, K6-3, K7 both looks great
on paper or foil but where are they ?. Let's wait until same
time next year to see the result.
