Comments on the Matsushita announcement.

Production capacity of 0.3M cells a month is pretty small compared to ULBI and VLNC cellphone battery line capacities which are about 1.5M a month. And Matsushita doesn't say what rate they are running at. I suspect they have a much smaller line, and are at least six months behind.

Also it would be interesting to see the battery specs, and what materials/technology they are using.

Still, it is another indication that there is a lot of interest in Li-poly batteries. We have had at least five announcements so far indicating customers intend to use Li-poly in new products.

Fall 97 Mitsubishi Pedion notebook supplier:ULBI
Status: suspended due to low supply availability and development of prismatic shaped Li-ion battery

Spring 98 Micron notebook
supplier: Unknown
Status: was expected in Fall of 98

Dec 98 LG cellphone
supplier: T&B (TDI etc.)
Status: Due on market anytime now.

Jan 99 Samsung cellphone
supplier: Shubila (Malaysian company)
Status: Due on market anytime now.

Jan 99 3Com Palm V PDA
supplier: Unknown
Status: expected introduction in April/May timeframe

As we can see, the product announcements are coming faster now. Its apparent that there is a lot of interest in Li-poly, and that interest is building. IMO, this is good news for any company that can build these batteries, and great news for companies that have superior performance Li-poly batteries. It is the companies that have the best technology, that will play Intel to the AMDs, Cyrixs, IDTCs etc of the world.
