actually bob, that wasnt my angle though you bring up some salient
points. for the record, i've got my "opportunist" hat on in this area
so i'll likely exhibit alot of ignorance. my point is that AOL is pledging
to spend a third of a billion bucks on new hardware. alot of that
(maybe half?) will go to modem expansion/upgrade.

at the same time, i dont see the bulk of AOL's subscribers rushing to
upgrade their hardware. whatever AOL gets will have to be
compatible with what exists currently. so the immediacy and
preliminary bulk of the modem sales in this scenario should come
from AOL itself, approx $150M worth. my guess is a package deal
with some primary vendor.

now that i've given the game plan away, please reciprocate with
the info about who AOL's major modem vendor is...
