I doubt ATM will fade away in the next generation of networks. It does have some difficulties with setting up services like auto-configuration using multicasting over the network which will be important when IPv6 comes out with neighbor discovery. Doesn't ATM need SONET to send information over long distances via fiber optics? From what I'm learning so far I think that IP protocol will run over ATM via SONET for long distance transmissions.
