I'm not saying you can't be friends, for awhile, but its dangerous. One day you can just look at a guy, you thought you only wanted as a friend, and suddenly feel other emotions. Men, on the other hand, are attracted to most women who are reasonably attractive, its a biological urge to reproduce as much as possible. So we have a collision of a man, probably already attracted, and a woman, who will feel more attracted as time goes on, because women are attracted to many of the emotional qualities friendship brings out in a man, then *boom* conflagration - at least if you happen to be involved with someone else.
Proximity, for humans, breeds complex emotions and one of our most intense drives is for pair bonding and mating. This is just undeniable. Familiarty does not, in my opinion, breed contempt, rather it breeds little humans.
Maybe I'm just oversexed but I've felt very attracted to men I NEVER would have considered had I not been around them all the time. Remember, the average male has a sexual thought about every 3-5 minutes, not a full on fantasy but a thought, who better to think about then the person standing right next to you, or sitting at the desk across from you, or in the next cubicle.....
