Rebuttal - The Hit Men

The book, The Hit Men, by Fredric Dannen is an oft misquoted and notoriously over-used example of what "inside the record business" is supposed to mean. This book is well written and loaded with responsible, journalistic, disclaimers such as "allegedly", "supposedly", "was reported to be", along with others. When those who choose to use half-truths and inuendo to discredit or smear somones career and life work, it is sad someone has to respond. Unfortunately, this is the world we live in today and respond we
will. The "Great Payola" scandal occurred almost twenty years ago. It was not a time that anyone in the record industry was proud of but, it was only a small part of what the book was about and indeed what the government was investigating. Anyone who has read the book will readily tell you it was ultimately a search for underworld ties to the entertainment industry and Bill was not looked at for this tie. The government was also unable to demonstrate any such ties to other individual personalities ----- and to note once more, none were Bill Craig. OUT OF 343 PAGES OF TEXT BILL CRAIG IS MENTIONED ONLY 3 TIMES! Bill is very proud of his career and helped to break the glass ceilings for black executives in major record labels such as ABC and CBS. In the book Bill was described as having "the promotion personality" that others lacked. They also said about BIll, "he could rattle off station call letters and describe their various markets as easliy as reciting the alphabet" (pages 188-189). Bill still has this ability and uses it each and every day to coordinate retail marketing along with airplay. We are lucky to have his
talents and professional abilities, and personal relationships with the industry power brokers.
As for BIll's indictment ----- the proof came from Bill himself. He had cleared what he was doing with his accountant and was told that if he presented 1099's for his expenditures then this would be legal and acceptable. And never think that what went on twenty years ago in the record industry doesn't occur in other industries as well. The govenment simply doesn't regulate it. For instance, did you know that food purveyors pay a marketing charge for shelf space in many GROCERY STORES? Do you also realize because of this there are hundreds of independent food products consumers never see because they can't afford to PAY for the shelf space? The computer industry is also undergoing a similar shakeup under the heading of anti-trust. If you
think that isn't true just ask Bill Gates. He'll tell you he is practicing nothing more than good, old-fashioned capitalism.
In short, Bill Craig is proud of his years in this record industry and his reputation. He is even prouder of his accomplishments. Read the book and judge Bill for yourself.

NOW LET'S ROCK.......
