Pancho: While there are plenty of reasons for the dollar to be weak, the question is, against what? In theory, holders of dollars will want to diversify and own euro's, but I have trouble taking that currency seriously given how completely ignorant of basic economics the governments (and voters) are in much of Europe.

For example, there was a recent article (it was probably online somewhere, but I read it in a paper) about how France is building up a large force of special inspectors to make sure that no one is working more than 45 hours per week, including executives of companies. They have the right to go in and look at computers and get other types of evidence, and if people have been working too long there are fines. Great way to help the French economy - people, accomplishing nothing useful, with the job of preventing other people from accomplishing anything. Pathetic. With that kind of thinking, how can the dollar depreciate against the Euro?

So I am not sure what is left. Gold? Commodities? Yen? Any thoughts on this? Thanks.
