It's interesting to note that of all the portals out there, Excite and Lycos rank near the bottom in usefulness, competing with CNet's (CNWK:Nasdaq) Snap (more in a minute), Netscape's Netcenter and Microsoft's (MSFT:Nasdaq) endlessly revamped MSN for that questionable prize. If you want a portal mainly for searching and like a table-of-contents service rather than an index-style service, you probably still want Yahoo! (YHOO:Nasdaq). Disney's new GO Network, formally launched last week, feels to me like the dark horse in the broader portal market. Especially with the withdrawal of ABC News' content from AOL last week and its migration to parent Disney's GO Network site, Disney may have a real winner here.)
